A new primary school serving parts of North Cardiff held its opening ceremony yesterday (Tuesday 23 June).
Fairoak Primary School, which we reported opened last September, brings together pupils, staff, and families from the former Allensbank and Gladstone Primary Schools and serves Heath, Gabalfa, Llandaff North and Plasnewydd, and mainly Cathays.

Yesterday's official opening event saw Cardiff Council leader and vice chair of governors, Chris Weaver, alongside chair of governors Sarah Crosbie, unveil the school’s plaque.
They were joined by the Rt Honourable Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Michael Michael, Cardiff Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for education, Sarah Merry, pupils, staff, governors and members of the local community.
The celebration showcased the school’s strong focus on creativity, inclusion and community. Guests enjoyed an exhibition of pupils’ work inspired by countries around the world, reflecting the diverse cultures represented across the school community.
A highlight of the day was the unveiling of a mural, co-created by pupils and local artist Tee2Sugars.

Visitors were also invited to explore the school’s newly developed garden space, featuring a hand-carved creative shelter, seating areas and a pond, delivered in partnership with the Bottega Project.
Headteacher Paula Shipton-Jones said: “Fairoak Primary School is built on a shared vision of inclusion, creativity and belonging. From the moment we opened our doors, there has been a real sense of pride across our school community. "The mural and garden are powerful examples of what we can achieve together – spaces that reflect our pupils’ voices, creativity and connection to the world around them.”
The name 'Fairoak' was chosen through consultation with pupils, parents, staff and governors and inspired by a historic 600-year-old oak tree that once stood in the area.
