New school opens, serving parts of North Cardiff

A new primary school officially opened this week, serving parts of North Cardiff.

Fairoak Primary brings together pupils, staff, and families from the former Allensbank and Gladstone Primary Schools and serves Heath, Gabalfa, Llandaff North and Plasnewydd, and mainly Cathays.

Located at the junction of Fairoak Road, Crwys Road, Cathays Terrace and Whitchurch Road, it offers 420 English-medium places and a nursery.

Reflecting on the first day, parent and mum of three, Jen Williams said; “It’s a really emotional but a really wonderful day to see these two communities come together.

"My children have come from Allensbank and it has been wonderful to be here this morning on the first day. It feels like a celebration, everyone has been very welcoming. I trust the leadership at this school and I know this is going to be a good year.”

The name 'Fairoak' was chosen through consultation with pupils, parents, staff, and governors, inspired by a 600-year-old oak tree that once stood in the area.

Headteacher Paula Shipton-Jones said: “Over the past year, staff, pupils, families, and the wider community have shown unwavering dedication, resilience, and collaboration to ensure a smooth and positive transition.

"This is more than a new school - it’s the start of a shared journey filled with promise, growth, and possibility for Fairoak Primary School.”
