Tramping through Rhiwbina for a peek at our natural history

A Cardiff author and blogger has shared a suburban walk through Rhiwbina and neighbouring areas, following the course of Rhydwaedlyd and Whitchurch Brook.

Matthew Yeomans, author of Return to My Trees and founder of Tramping, a walking adventure site, recently published the 10k (six miles) route on his site.

"Attempting to trace the entire route of Whitchurch and Rhydwaedlyd Brook was a fascinating (if very wet) bit of urban tramping - especially where the brook courses its way through the heart of Rhiwbina village," he told us.

"It made me realise just how many local people have a daily connection to Cardiff's mini waterways either through dog walking or taking a morning stroll.

"But also how few of us take the time to fully explore this slice of nature in its entirety. Doing so gives us a peek at the natural history of Cardiff and how places like Rhiwbina, Whitchurch and Gabalfa might have looked before they were developed".

The Tramping site shares walks in various parts of Wales. "On our walks, there is normally a good story to learn about," the site explains. "And, rest assured, when you go tramping, there’ll always be a good pub, cafe or a place just to soak up life at the end of the day."
