Rhiwbina film wins festival awards

A made-in-Rhiwbina short film has won awards at three festivals, locally, nationally, and internationally.

Annalium 8: Sssss was filmed in South Wales - including scenes in Rhiwbina - and was written and co-produced by Rhiwbina-born-and-raised Rob Lancey, and also produced by our own Andy Weltch of Weltch Media.

At the weekend (25 May), it was screened at the inaugural Celynen Film Festival in Newbridge, where it was named Best Short Film, and at the Indie Line Film Festival in Istanbul, where it was voted Best Short Film (No Dialogue).

Francesca Louise White and Andrew Griffin receive the awards at Wild Indie Festival

The previous week (18 May), it was screened at the Wild Indie SciFi and Fantasy Film Festival, where it received the Best First-time Filmmaker Award and an honorary mention for Best Short Film (pictured).

The news follows a string of previous achievements, which we reported earlier in the year.

"It's fantastic that the film is appreciated by festival judges far and wide," said Andy. "I'm especially pleased for our brilliant cast and crew - these awards recognise their talent and hard work."

Directed by Andrew ‘Griff’ Griffin, the film stars Francesca Louise White and Minaii Baelfire. Francesca is an award-winning actress, most recently seen in the feature Ship of the Damned, now available on Sky Store, and Minaii holds the distinction of being the world’s first Black Young Elsa in a stage production of Frozen.

Annalium 8: Sssss is set in a world where all animal life has seemingly been killed, until a lone scientist in hazmat gear finds a young girl, apparently unaffected and living in a forest.

You may have seen the film at Monico Movies last October or at another local screening, but if you missed it, you can now watch it online here.

You can see the trailer here, and be sure to check it out on IMDb.
