Meet Rhiwbina's superheroes - the Welsh Avengers!

Get ready to meet Rhiwbina's own band of superheroes - Capten Cymru and the Welsh Avengers!

Their comedy adventures have been captured on film - mostly shot in Rhiwbina - and will be premiered at a free show in Ye Olde Butchers Arms on 16 September, along with sketches, stand-up comedy, and a raffle.

Rhiwbina resident and filmmaker Luke Blight, the man behind Capten Cymru, explained: "The idea began years ago when I was a kid and looking to make a Welsh superhero for myself.

"This idea was put at the back of my head as I got older but it wasn't until my time in university until I met now good friend Aron Mathias-Weston - a fellow Welshman on my course - and once we started talking about the idea, we knew we wanted to make a Welsh comedy with these characters.

"We ended up writing a 45-page pilot where the team are tasked with saving Tom Jones from an assassination. We soon realised how ambitious that was so we created a shorter pilot that we released on St David's Day 2025.

"Since then we've been creating various skits with the characters, building the world and then now recently completing our latest episode, Gwaith Tim, filmed in Rhiwbina!  

"Capten Cymru is the leader of the Welsh Avengers. The mantle has been passed down through two generations and it is his responsibility to keep the village of Brynbawr and Cymru safe.

"I see him as  a mixture of Kermit the frog, trying to keep this rag-tag team together, Superman for his compassion and heroism and Captain America for his strategic thinking and patriotism. He is a hero that doesn't have powers but does what he can to keep the people of his village safe, sometimes with his pet dragon, Flames." 

Luke says the project has a strong connection to Rhiwbina - with 95% of the project filmed here, including the finale taking place at this year's Rhiwbina Summer Festival (thanks to the amazing team at Rhiwbina Events!).

Scenes were also filmed in The Deri Stores, Pettigrew, various streets, and at Ye Olde Butchers Arms, where the premiere takes place.

And what's next for the Welsh Avengers? "The dream is to film in various villages across Wales so everyone can have a moment of 'I know where that is!'," said Luke.

"Rhiwbina is an inspiration as it's the only village life I've known, but other inspiration comes from Pembroke where the co-creator of the Welsh Avengers, Aron is from. Another inspiration is the fictional, Craggy Island from Father Ted!

"The hope one day is to get the show picked up by a broadcaster so we can show more people the world of Capten Cymru and the world of the Welsh Avengers."
