When Rhiwbina Cricket Club faced mighty Glamorgan

Some ninety years ago, Rhiwbina Cricket Club played Glamorgan County Cricket Club in two pre-season friendly games at the Rhiwbina CC ground.

Rhiwbina Info reader Lawrence Hourahane wrote to tell us about the games, which were played on 30 April 1933 and 28 April 1934.

The Cricket Archive website lists the Rhiwbina team for the 1933 match as being (in batting order): M Bradden, C Hicks, G Dring, T John, CJ Tombs, F Fenn, JF Dyer, K Downing, I Thomas, WG Florence and an unnamed player.

They must have played at a high standard to face a team from the first class County Championship.

Glamorgan fielded a strong team including England international Maurice Turnbull, and county regulars Jack Mercer, Arnold Dyson and Dick Duckfield and having been bowled out for 124, restricted Rhiwbina to 67-9.

The scores for the 1934 game have not survived. Unless someone knows different?

Lawrence wondered where these games were played, and he thinks he found the answer in this article from Living Magazines, which suggests the Rhiwbina ground opened in the early 1920s, when a range of sports were played at the Rhiwbina Recreational Club and the site of what is now Rhiwbeina Primary School.
