Five pubs in Rhiwbina, as well as others in Birchgrove, Llanishen, Whitchurch, Llandaff North, and Tongwynlais, have been earmarked for inclusion on Cardiff's Local Heritage List.
The move seeks to recognise and preserve 71 existing and former pubs, clubs and social or cultural venues for their positive contribution to the city's culture and visual distinctiveness.
The Rhiwbina pubs are: The Butchers Arms (rebuilt in 1932), Nine Giants (built as a house in 1895 and became a pub after 1948), The Pantmawr Inn (possible C18th origins, a pub since c1960), The Deri Inn (1970s pub, possibly built around pre-1811 farmhouse), and The Toby Carvery (formerly Mason's Arms) (oldest part of pub from 1871 or earlier).
Also included are The Birchgrove Inn and New Inn in Birchgrove (Heath ward); Fox and Hounds, Hollybush, Malsters Arms, The Plough, and Royal Oak in Whitchurch; Lewis Arms in Tongwynlais; the former Wolf's Castle in Llanishen; The Pineapple, Railway Inn, Master Gunner, and former Cow and Snuffers (now Disraeli House) in Llandaff North.
Cardiff has an existing Local List of around 200 buildings but it says a comprehensive review is overdue.
Since the original list was adopted in 1997, around a third of the 323 buildings designated at that time have been subsequently listed by Cadw for national importance, giving them statutory protection.
However, some buildings have been altered or even demolished. "As a result," said Dan De'Ath, Cardiff Council's cabinet member for strategic planning, "the list needs revision to include new additions and to bring in controls over alteration or demolition where possible".
The council has now launched a public consultation on the proposed local list additions which forms the first phase of a full review of the Local Heritage List. To take part in the consultation - which closes on 18 September, visit www.cardiffldp.co.uk/local-list.
Buildings are not proposed for local listing if they are already on the Cadw statutory list (Grade II or above) or are protected by being in a conservation area.
Many pubs in Cardiff are therefore already protected in this way from alteration or demolition.
Local listing will mean that future planning applications will be assessed to ensure that they 'preserve or enhance' the 'architectural quality, historic and cultural significance, character, integrity and/or setting' of each building.
Following the consultation, a summary of the responses will be compiled and reported back to the council's cabinet.
