Gwaelod-y-Garth flood - Friday update

Cardiff Council has issued updated information about the flooding in North Cardiff.

At lunchtime today (Friday 31 July), the council said it was continuing to work with emergency services and partner agencies in response to the incident in Gwaelod-y-Garth.

"Council officers from Highways, Flood Risk Management, Transport, Waste Management and Housing attended the scene throughout yesterday (Thursday) afternoon and evening to support the emergency response and assist local residents.

"Due to the significant damage caused by the flooding to both roads and property, road closures and traffic management measures have been put in place while the emergency response continues.

"Main Road in Gwaelod-y-Garth and Heol Goch between Gwaelod-y-Garth and Pentyrch are currently closed while clean-up operations and investigations continue. Residents and motorists are asked to follow all road closure signs and diversion routes, which are in place for public safety.

"The flooding has affected 15 properties in the area. Thirteen properties were evacuated by South Wales Fire and Rescue Service yesterday. Housing officers have been supporting residents affected by the flooding, with accommodation arranged for one family overnight. Officers will provide support to a further family this morning, while other affected families have made their own private arrangements.

"If any residents have housing concerns and would like to contact the Council Housing Service in relation to this, they should contact the Cardiff Council Housing Options Centre on 029 2057 0750.

"Highways and Cleansing teams have been working on site to clear roads and remove debris where it is safe to do so. However, significant damage has been caused to the highway, with mud, silt, debris and other obstructions continuing to block access. There are also ongoing safety concerns relating to both the road and the surrounding embankments.

"Due to the possibility of river pollution, the public are advised not to enter the watercourse of the rivers and not allow their dogs to swim in the water until the investigations are complete".

At the request of South Wales Police, the council said road closures are currently in place at:

• Heol Goch in Pentyrch, beyond the junction with Clos Goch when travelling out of Pentyrch.

• Main Road, Gwaelod-y-Garth, beyond the junction with South Glade when travelling towards the village from the A470/Ty Nant Road roundabout.

Main Road from the A470/Ty Nant Road roundabout remains open as far as South Glade to allow access for residents, businesses and those needing to reach the 24-hour veterinary practice on Gwaelod-y-Garth Industrial Estate, as well as South Glade, River Glade and neighbouring side streets. Beyond this point, Main Road is fully closed.

The council will continue to work with emergency services and partner agencies to support residents while investigations continue.

Council leader, Chris Weaver said: "Our priority remains the safety and wellbeing of residents affected by this flooding incident. We are continuing to work closely with the emergency services and partner agencies to support those affected, assess the damage and help the community recover.

"I'd like to thank residents for their patience and cooperation while road closures remain in place. Significant damage has been caused to the highway infrastructure, and it is vital that these areas remain closed until they can be made safe.

"Council teams will continue to support affected residents and carry out the necessary clean-up, investigation and repair work as quickly and safely as possible."
