Plaid Cymru leads in historic Senedd election

Plaid Cymru has emerged as the dominant force in the new Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf constituency, securing three of the six Senedd seats in Thursday's (7 May) election.

The successful candidates are Dafydd Trystan Davies, Zaynub Akbar, and Nick Carter (Plaid Cymru); Cai Parry-Jones (Reform UK); Shav Taj (Labour); and Paul Rock (Green Party).

Turnout in the constituency was relatively high at 58.49%, reflecting a level of engagement with the new electoral system, which replaced single-member constituencies and a regional list with a proportional model.

Voters now choose one party, with six representatives elected from each of Wales’s 16 new 'super-constituencies', which has increased the number of Members of the Senedd (MSs) from 60 to 96.

Across Wales, the enlarged Senedd sees Plaid Cymru become the largest party with 43 seats, ahead of Reform UK on 34, Welsh Labour on nine, Conservatives on seven, Greens on two, and Liberal Democrats on one.

Our new consituency, Caerdydd Ffynnon Taf, covers the north and east of Cardiff, including Rhiwbina, Whitchurch, and Llanishen.

The new Senedd will meet for the first time later this month to elect a Presiding Officer and confirm the next First Minister, with Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth expected to take the post.
