Child-friendly show delivers songs, laughter, and fun

REVIEW: 'The Frog Prince' at Sherman Theatre

The Frog Prince is currently playing at The Sherman Theatre, and we were lucky enough to go and have front row seats to one of the performances!

It follows the story of a young princess, Biwti, and her father, the King, who both love Christmas.

Like most families, they spend the day together celebrating and want the day, as well as everything else in life, to be “perfect”.

During the planning of their special day, her father gifts her a beautiful lucky charm which she treasures. After receiving the gift, she ventures out into the woods for a stroll, which is where she meets an unlikely friend, Brogs.

Although resistant at first, Princess Biwti soon realises that she and her new friend have a lot more in common than they first thought, and that "perfect" has many different forms.

This production is aimed at children aged 3-6 years, but it provides thorough entertainment for all children, and a lot of adults! It is filled with songs, laughter and plenty of fun.

The actors do an incredible job of ensuring the children are a part of the magic as well.

Anni Dafydd plays Princess Biwti, and Owen Alun plays Brogs and The King, and both are so fun and enthusiastic with the children.

I took my niece and nephew, who were captivated by the whole performance, joining in with the jumping and “Oi Oi Oi”. Before the show started, Anni and Owen even came to the crowd and spoke to the children while in character, making the show even more personable.

Gwawr Loader wrote this production, while Elin Phillips directed it. The pair did a fantastic job of making the show enjoyable for all the family.

The show lasted for about 55 minutes which was the perfect amount of time for young children. Inside was a lovely intimate venue, with soft mats for the children to sit (or as most did, lie down) on, and benches for anyone else.

It created a lovely and relaxing environment! The set was simple, but extremely effective, with beautiful colours and props that the kids loved. It’s not like a typical theatre either, the performance is done in the middle of the room, with the mats and benches either side meaning everyone can get a perfect view of the performance.

I would highly recommend this production to anyone who wants to introduce their children to the theatre.

The short running time offers a perfect little test run, as well as a relaxing and no pressure environment for all your little ones to enjoy without feeling confined or uncomfortable in typical theatre seats.

The Frog Prince is playing at The Sherman Theatre until 3 January 2026. There are performances in both English and Welsh. Tickets are available via The Sherman Theatre website here for the English The Frog Prince and here for the Welsh Biwti a Brogs.
