Rhiwbina villagers have no truck with HGVs

People power in Rhiwbina has led to the village being granted a weight limitation restricting heavy goods vehicle (HGV) use.

A long-term issue, which has worried many residents and businesses, particularly in Beulah Road, has finally been addressed by Cardiff Council.

The use of the village roads by HGVs began in earnest when used as a detour from the emergency works being carried out on Caerphilly Road bridge. Although intended to be a short-term solution, HGVs failed to return to their original route once the works were completed. Instead, they continued to use the unsuitable village roads, increasing traffic and on several occasions damaging or demolishing railings and even traffic lights.

Rhiwbina residents lobbied the Council and local Councillors about the dangers and damages caused. Businesses expressed concerns at the impact on their trade and a reduction in foot fall as people were avoiding the area due to congestion, noise and the inability to park. The village's Eco Team held a public meeting in December 2022 to raise concerns and identify solutions.

Cardiff Council has now confirmed a weight limit of 7.5 tonnes applies to Beulah Road and the necessary signage is in place. The Council has also reiterated to HGV drivers they should use Caerphilly Road to avoid nearby residential areas.

HGV drivers will still be able to request a permit to drive in the Beulah Road weight limit zone should they require access, but this welcome move will undoubtedly reduce such traffic significantly.
