A petition has been launched, opposing the closure of LloydsPharmacy in Rhiwbina Village.
We understand the branch at 4c Heol y Deri is among several around the country, which the company is planning to close because they are “no longer commercially viable”.
Last month, a spokesperson for LloydsPharmacy’s parent company, McKesson UK, told Chemist & Druggist, it was “proposing to close” some branches “that are no longer commercially viable for us to operate”.
The decision follows “increasing financial pressures” from factors including COVID-19, the spokesperson said.
At least two businesses in the Village have already closed because of the pandemic – both The Olive Branch cafe and Beulah Dress Agency have announced they would not reopen.
In a Tweet on Monday (September 7th), local councillor Jayne Cowan wrote: “Please sign our petition to stop @LloydsPharmacy closing our #Rhiwbina branch in December 2020. It’s a lifeline for so many local residents, many who walk there to collect their prescriptions and other items. ”
And her colleague Oliver Owen Tweeted: “I, @JayneCowan and @Adrian1Robson and have written a joint letter to Lloyds HQ to ask them to reconsider shutting the chemist on Heol y Deri, #Rhiwbina. It would be a tremendous loss for our community. It is currently planned for closure on 11th December this year.”
The petition states: “We the undersigned call on the Head Office of Lloyds Pharmacy to stop the closure of the branch in Rhiwbina, Cardiff. The chemist is in the heart of the Village and used by so many. Rhiwbina is home to some of the oldest people in Cardiff, and need a chemist in close walking distance of their home.”
LloydsPharmacy also has branches in Birchgrove at 97-99 Caerphilly Road and in Whitchurch at the rear of 42a Merthyr Road and 8 Park Road.
Other nearby pharmacies include Well Rhiwbina in Heol Llanishen Fach, Insync Pharmacy at 67 Thornhill Road, and Well Pharmacy at Birchgrove Medical Centre.
