Papa John’s is coming to Rhiwbina

US-based takeaway and pizza delivery restaurant, Papa John’s, is coming to Rhiwbina.

The chain, the third largest of its kind in the world, has been given the go-ahead to open a branch in a former estate agency in Thornhill Road.

Cardiff council’s planning committee gave the go ahead this week, subject to the company adapting its opening hours to between 11am and 10.30pm from Sunday to Thursday from 11am to 11pm on Friday and Saturday, which means the takeaway would close half an hour earlier than it had hoped to.

The application was approved despite objection from some local residents and councillors.

The Papa John’s restaurant franchise was founded in 1983 when “Papa” John Schnatter started selling pizzas to customers in his father’s tavern in Jeffersonville, Indiana. He started the business in a converted broom cupboard, with second-hand equipment, purchased by selling his car.

The company is now the third largest takeaway and pizza delivery restaurant chain in the world. Its slogan is “Better Ingredients. Better Pizza. Papa John’s.”
