Nest’s food market is tasty addition to Rhiwbina events

Last weekend (October 6th) Rhiwbina’s gift and homeware shop, Nest, hosted its first food market, with stalls held by local, independent businesses, writes Alys Jones.

Nest promises a friendly and inspirational shopping experience, which has now been extended to a food market held on the first Saturday of every month for a trial period of six months.

The market welcomed three local businesses, including independent bakery Pettigrew Bakery whose Victoria Park bakery is open seven days a week. They can often be found at Farmers Markets in Roath on Saturdays and Riverside on Sundays.

Holy Yolks also attended, selling their speciality scotch eggs with soft yolks, in various creative flavours including chorizo, bacon and a vegetarian falafel variety. They are usually found at Roath and Riverside market, pop-up food events around Pontcanna and Canton.

Carrot Top Bakery are small batch bakery based in Newport, who specialise in celebration cakes and offer vegan options. They held a stall at the market selling all kinds of treats including rocky road, gingerbread biscuits and chocolate fudge cake.

Rhiwbina hosts several successful markets. Rhiwbina Farmers’ Market was originally a one-off event in 2010, but after receiving such enthusiastic local support it became a weekly event. Rhiwbina’s Handmade Market is in its sixth year, providing creative Christmas gifts and decorations. This month’s Handmade Christmas Craft Fair will also be an opportunity local businesses to sell their products and for residents to shop locally, finding things they may not have anywhere else.

Nest’s Anna Knight said: “We wanted to bring a food market into the centre of the village on the weekend, so working families were also able to benefit from buying from local producers. The market has increased footfall to the whole of the village with many businesses benefiting from it. Rhiwbina has a fantastic community who support the village businesses widely, something we are very appreciative of and therefore we work hard to keep our business fresh!”

Nest’s next Food Market will take place on Saturday November 3rd, with Carrot Top Bakery and Pettigrew Bakery returning, and even more stall holders. It looks to be an appetising addition to Rhiwbina’s calendar of events.
