Monico Movies legacy

Updated: Aug 24

Following the closure of much-loved Rhiwbina community cinema Monico Movies, the committee has ensured its legacy will continue.

Discussions with Film Hub Wales led to Monico Movies getting in touch with the recently opened Hwb y Gors, in Cwmgors, Ammanford.

The development of the former school site has been made possible with the support of Awel Aman Tawe, a registered charity and company limited by guarantee focused on delivering energy efficiency, renewable energy coops, community resilience, sustainable transport, community arts and education programmes.

Having seen the remarkable work undertaken at the Hwb and in the wider community, the committee unanimously agreed to donate Monico Movies' tried and tested equipment to enable a new community cinema to be born.

Hwb officers Gerald and Teilo headed east to Rhiwbina to accept the kit, where they were treated to a history of Monico Movies from Harley.

Gerald said: "The equipment itself is of a very high standard and specification, in absolute pristine condition ... we are extremely fortunate to be in possession of this kit, which will undoubtedly prove to be a valuable asset to the Hwb and Awel Aman Tawe.

"A massive ‘Thank you’ to Rhiwbina Community Cinema/Monico Movies, for this wonderful and generous donation, and to Viv, Harley and Justin for their warm welcome and hospitality. We’re so looking forward to having film events at Hwb y Gors and keeping the spirit of Monico Movies alive".

Commenting on the invaluable gift, Harley Jones said: "After ten years serving Rhiwbina, it's great to see Monico Movies helping to inspire a new community cinema in Wales".
