Rhiwbina Tennis Club was among Britain’s top three in the ‘best competition’ category at the LTA (Lawn Tennis Association) awards, writes Sophie Platt.
Rhiwbina missed out on the title to Scotland’s Western Lawn Tennis Club and the East Gloucestershire Club Championship. However, being in the top three is a huge achievement, and one everyone at Rhiwbina Tennis Club is proud of.
The nomination was for the E Y Wilkey Welsh Open, which was held in September 2020, spanning over 5 days with 107 players and 135 matches. This was an international seniors (35 to 65) competition which is ITF ranking, and featuring competitors from countries like Australia, India, and South Africa.
Rhiwbina Tennis Club won a Tennis Wales award Competition of the Year award in March 2021, which was added to the list of awards they have won.
This tournament was the only one in Wales to feature senior players, and the 2020 tournament saw a 36% increase in participants than the previous year.
This tournament hosted by Rhiwbina Tennis Club finished 3rd out of the seven that were nominated.
The award ceremony was streamed live on the LTA’s Youtube channel.
