Children's summer reading challenge launches in Rhiwbina

This year's summer reading challenge for children gets under way this Saturday (6 July) at Rhiwbina Hub and other libraries and hubs across the city.

Presented by The Reading Agency, the ‘Summer Reading Challenge 2024: Marvellous Makers' aims to ignite children's creativity and storytelling abilities through the magic of reading throughout the summer holidays.

Young readers will be encouraged to discover new books and stories while engaging in free creative activities. Children who sign up to the challenge can track their reading as they go and be rewarded by free incentives along the way.

It's open to children aged 4 to 11.

Taking place in libraries and online, the challenge provides a supportive environment where young readers can explore their imaginations. Activities include junk modelling, arts and crafts, music, and dance. You can find out more here.

In partnership with the arts charity Create and public libraries, this year's challenge celebrates the artistic talents of children. T

A Cardiff Council spokesperson said: " The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for children to continue learning and growing over the summer months and will help prevent the 'summer dip' learning loss many children experience when they aren't in school.

"By reading books and collecting incentives at hubs and libraries across Cardiff, young readers can foster their creative thinking skills over the summer break in a free, fun way to keep their young minds active. "

After signing up, children will collect their core pack. With each book they read they will get a new prize. This year they will be getting Summer Reading Challenge stickers, Hub torch keyrings and interchangeable colour pens. Everyone who completes the challenge will also receive a medal and certificate.

You can sign up at Rhiwbina Hub or any Cardiff library or hub, including Whitchurch Hub, Llanishen Hub, Llandaff North and Gabalfa Hub, Radyr Hub, Rhydypennau Hub, and Llanedeyrn Powerhouse Hub, or sign up online here.
