Child's play at Rhydypenau Park

A children's play area in north Cardiff is being redeveloped after consultation with children at nearby schools.

Cardiff Council consulted pupils from Rhydypenau Primary and Coed Glas Primary Schools and have selected the play equipment which will be installed as a result.

Demolition is currently taking place at the park, which is accessible by foot from Fidlas Road and Rhydypenau Road.

The council has provided images of what the park will eventually look like, with a water-based concept inspired by local reservoirs and lakes.

The completed play area will feature toddler, junior, basket and "fishing rod" swings, a wheelchair accessible roundabout and accessible dragonfly seesaw, a climbing mound and slide, boat themed multi-play areas, bird and fish themed spring toys, and an "island to island" zipway.

The work has inevitably resulted in calls from many other parts of Cardiff for such investment in their own playgrounds.

Some readers may recall the heady days when Rhiwbina's Parc y Pentre had its own children's play area located in the south east of the park, where today you can still see a concrete slab where the heavy metal play equipment, including a roundabout and rocking horse, was located.

This original equipment was removed in the early 1980s and replaced with a wooden constructed playground for younger children which was regrettably removed in the early 1990s due to its deterioration.

Perhaps it is time for a new play area to be provided in the heart of Rhiwbina?
