Cardiff’s New Theatre’s latest show gives you a chance to call the shots. Mischief Movie Night is improvised on stage, letting the audience suggest a genre, location and title, writes Alys Jones. The show is then brought to life as a blockbuster on stage, complete with rewinds, fast forwards, directors’ cuts and a live score.
This hit West End show was nominated for the prestigious Olivier Awards in the ‘Best New Comedy’ category earlier this year, starring the original cast and creators of The Play That Goes Wrong, Peter Pan Goes Wrong and The Comedy About a Bank Robbery. Their credits also include prime time BBC One television programmes A Christmas Carol Goes Wrong and Peter Pan Goes Wrong.
The company behind the show, Mischief Theatre, began as an improvised comedy group, founded in 2008 by graduates of The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. They now perform improvised and original scripted work across the UK, and will tour to Cardiff once again this autumn with The Comedy About a Bank Robbery.
Charlie Russell of Mischief Theatre said: “It’s such a joy to bring Mischief Movie Night to such welcoming venues like the New, all of which have played to 100% capacity with our Goes Wrong shows. Returning to our improv roots is very special for us as this is where it all began. We’re very excited!”
Mischief Movie Night runs from 18 – 22 July and tickets are available from the box office on (029) 2087 8889 and newtheatrecardiff.co.uk.
